I just posted my homestay program but for those who are on a lower budget, you might want to consider renting just a room from a local family. I have a friend who stayed at this nice apartment that only costs Chinese RMB 100/day/room. The family sends him to the subway everyday and he does the sightseeing by himself. When he's done with all his travel, the family picks him up from the subway. So, if you are looking to just backpack and want to save on hotels, check this out.
