passport taken away in Jordan

I'm writing this post just to let you know what happened to me in Jordan last month....

well, me and a friend bought a cheap vacation package to Jordan while traveling in Hungary, the price was right (about 400$ for a week per person all inclusive), so we went....

we were a group of about 50, most of the people in our group were Hungarians, we were the only Canadians. as we go through customs and immigration, the officer takes away all passports from everyone and sends the group on it's way.

this freaked me out, i'm not used to have my passport taken away like this, it just don't feel right! the passport is the only valid ID of a traveler, without it in most countries you are "naked". so i told the officer that i wanted my passport back and that i wouldn't leave the airport until i had it back.... very unkindly the officer denied my request but with much protest i finally got it back.... all the rest of our group left their passports behind.... (most didn't care anyways)

has such a thing happened to anyone else? is this normal practice to take away a passport like this?

Thats actually fairly normal - when we we in Egypt our passports were taken by the hotel and we didn't see them again until we were going home...
