i'm heading to La Habana for a week in July and would like some tips. i know it will be scorching hot, so any advice as to how hot/how to survive it? I'm also interested in doing the home stay thing, are there any websites where u can make reservations in advance? Money wise, can you change travellers cheques in most Cuban banks? and regarding the CUC/Peso thing, as I like to get off the beaten track, how can tourists switch CUC for pesos, and is it safe to do so? How can you best avoid getting scammed on CUC prices, I've heard some places will try to charge one-to-one on peso prices? Is Cuba as expensive as I've heard for tourists? Also, I'm vegetarian - what are the chances of getting decent veggie food?

Apart from that, any general tips/recommendations would be most welcome, things to see in and outside La Habana, any good beaches nearby, good bars/restaurants, where to catch some salsa, how to get around... look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks.

Cuba has a tropical climate, but with no extreme temperatures since it is cooled by the gentle breezes of the trade winds. It has two very definite seasons: the rainy season (from May to October) and the dry season (from November to April). There is a mean average of 330 sunny days a year. The mean temperature is 25.5 degrees Celsius. The mean temperature of the coastal waters is 25 degrees Celsius in winter and 28 degrees Celsius in summer. The mean relative humidity is 78%. The mean yearly rainfall is 1,515 mm. The driest months are August and December.

The most preferred months of the year for locals to go to the beach..

Nothing better than an iced cold Cristal beer!
